Size guide
Cricket bats and hockey sticks
Sizes go by the player's height, not age. The charts below are the brands' own.
Cricket bats
Kookaburra South Africa's chart, which it says can be used for all junior and senior bats. Gray-Nicolls publishes the same heights from size 1 to Harrow.
| Bat size | Player height | In feet |
|---|---|---|
| Size 1 | up to 130 cm | up to 4'3" |
| Size 2 | 130 to 137 cm | 4'3" to 4'6" |
| Size 3 | 137 to 145 cm | 4'6" to 4'9" |
| Size 4 | 145 to 152 cm | 4'9" to 5' |
| Size 5 | 152 to 160 cm | 5' to 5'3" |
| Size 6 | 160 to 165 cm | 5'3" to 5'5" |
| Harrow | 165 to 170 cm | 5'5" to 5'7" |
| Small Adult | 170 to 175 cm | 5'7" to 5'9" |
| Short Handle | 175 to 183 cm | 5'9" to 6' |
| Long Blade | 183 cm and up | 6' and up |
- Some brands also make a size 0 for players under about 4 feet (Kookaburra Australia and Gray-Nicolls).
- In-between sizes have brand names, such as Small Adult (Kookaburra) and Super Lite (Gray-Nicolls).
- Gray-Nicolls' advice if you are between two sizes: choose the one that lets you stand comfortably with the bat grounded beside your leg, without bending too much.

Hockey sticks
Stick length is in inches. The brands do not agree, so here is each brand's chart. Use the chart for the brand you are buying. Heights are in centimetres.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| 28" | up to 122 | under 122 | 107 to 117 | 109 to 123 |
| 30" | 122 to 130 | 122 to 130 | 117 to 122 | 124 to 131 |
| 32" | 130 to 137 | 130 to 137 | 127 to 132 | 132 to 135 |
| 34" | 137 to 152 | 137 to 145 | 140 to 152 | 140 to 154 |
| 35" | 152 to 161 | 145 to 152 | 152 to 162 | 155 to 161 |

| 37.5" | 178 and up | 180 to 192 | 184 to 193 | 170 to 184 |
| 38" | - | over 192 | - | - |
| 38.5" | - | - | 193 and up | 181 and up |
- 36.5" is the usual adult length (Gryphon calls it the standard adult size).
- Grays also makes junior lengths of 24", 26", 27", 31" and 33".
- A quick check for juniors: the top of the stick should come to about the top of the hip or just above (Gryphon). Osaka adds that defenders often prefer a shorter stick for control and forwards a longer one for reach.
